Description
Phil Vampatella on his return to the Hancock on 22 June 66 following the successful downing of a Mig-17. His aircraft had been hit by AAA while circling a downed Photo Crusader and was heading out to a tanker when the rest of the RESCAP force was jumped by Migs. Phil flew his damaged aircraft back into the fight and tried to stop a Mig from shooting his Flight Lead, Cole Black down, but was unable to do that. He rolled in on the Mig that had downed Black (it turns out it was flown by Nguyen Van Bay) but changed his attack to a closer Mig, when he saw another coming on in his "six". He went to burner and went for the deck with the Mig behind him shooting. The Mig gave up when they went "feet wet", and when he did, Phil turned and hit him with a Sidewinder. After receiving only enough fuel to make one pass at the Hancock (that's all the A-4 Tanker could spare) he returned to find that only the 1 and 3 wires were operational, the others were out for repairs. He made a successful trap, taking the 1 wire in case he missed he wouldn't have had fuel to go around. I have suggested the title of this piece to be "OK 1Wire", the grade the LSO gave him.
